The Journey of the Grafs to the South Pacific 2021

Nargana and Rio de Diablo, Panama

We visited the island town of Nargana, which is called Yandup in Guna language.  It is connected to its sister island town of Corazon de Jesus, or Akuanusatupu  in Guna.  These towns are near shore and less traditional than most Guna settlements.  They have small shops to buy food and supplies including water, diesel and gasoline.  Yandup and Akuanusatupu are connected with one another by a footbridge.  There are no automobiles here, but many boats that make regular trips with supplies out to the surrounding islands.  There is also a health clinic that provides medical and dental services.  All of the residents have been vaccinated for COVID-19.

Nargana, Panama

We visited briefly with Soledad and  her family (left).  We learned the sad news that her husband Federico had recently passed away.  Federico was well known and respected in the sailing community as a guide, provisioner, and all around helpful person.

Rio de Diablo

Before leaving Nargana, we took a morning dinghy ride up the Rio de Diablo (Devil River), which empties into the town's bay.  We saw fruit plantations that the Guna access by boat on the river.  We saw the Guna cemetery at the river's edge.  There were a variety of small boats, some with paddles and some with motors.  We saw birds, crocodiles, and lizards.  It was a great way to start the day.
